Eligibility: The contest is open to graduating Grade 12 students who are residents of Whitby and registered in Whitby schools within the Durham District and Durham Catholic School Boards. Applicants should be able to demonstrate solid volunteer service experience in the community. To be eligible to receive a prize, Candidates must be accepted in and attend a first-year, full-time program of study at an accredited Canadian post-secondary education institution for the 2015-16 school year.
Contest Entry: Each applicant will complete an online written application and provide endorsements. Selected candidates will present a six (6) to eight (8) minute speech indicating how their volunteer work relates to the Rotary Four-Way Test and exemplifies the aims and goals of the Four-Way Test: - Of the things we think, say or do:
First...is it the truth?
Second...is it fair to all concerned?
Third...will it build goodwill and better friendships?
Fourth...will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Step 1: Application Process - Due Tuesday, March 31, 2015
1) Complete online written application focusing on:
“Why are you a good candidate for this scholarship?”
2) Two endorsements from mentors - Due Wednesday, April 1, 2015
These letters must be sent by a School and a Volunteer Community Sponsor directly to
your school's Guidance Office endorsing your participation in the contest. These letters will
be picked up by a member of the Whitby Rotary Club.

Successful participants will be notified by Wednesday, April 8, 2015.
Step 2: Speech Preparation
Each selected candidate will present a 6-8 minute speech indicating how the applicant’s volunteer work relates to the Rotary Four-Way Test and exemplifies the aims and goals of the Four-Way Test.
Contest Rules:
1. Topic. The topic of the speech should be specifically addressed to the Four-Way Test. This must be done in the body of the speech,
and is not to be reserved for concluding statements.
2. Length. Speeches should be no less than six (6) minutes and no more than eight (8) minutes.
3. Props. Neither props nor electronic devices may be used.
4. Authorship. A Candidate and Finalist must be the author of his or her own speech.
5. Profanities/Obscenities/Colloquialisms, etc. Use of profanities, obscenities, and unpatriotic sentiment is not allowed, not even for emotional impact. Use of slang and colloquialisms is generally discouraged. If a Candidate is in doubt about the appropriateness of a topic, he or she should submit questions to the email address provided above.
Step 3: Speech Presentation

- A lectern and microphone will be available for speakers to use if they choose. Contestants may bring paper notes to the lectern for reference purposes. The use of notes, however, may affect the quality of the speech and, therefore, the judges’ evaluations of the speech.
- The order of presentation will be determined by lottery. Candidates arriving late will be disqualified.
- Your guests (parents and other family members) are invited to attend the event.
- Dress for the event is professional attire.
